19:00 Lecture - Preferring the present or the future (in English)
A few experiments of economic psychology demonstrate our intuitive understanding of ‘discounting’. The marshmallow experiment illustrates a very short-run individual trade-off. We are mostly acquainted with medium term life-cycle behaviour such as decisions on pension-saving. At the extreme are very long-term inter-generational decisions made at the level of society. What similarities and differences characterize individual or collective choices or trade-offs in the short run as well as the very long run?
20:00 Panel discussion - Climate change and biodiversity (in Dutch)
How do future social costs and benefits determine the decisions and behaviour of politicians, business and ourselves?
- Moderator Guido Erreygers, Professor of economics, University of Antwerp
- Wouter De Geest, CEO BASF Antwerp
