| Abstract: | This paper aims to analyze the Western discourse on the dress of Muslim women as it is represented in Time Magazine. The study tries to answer the following questions: How is the clothing of Muslim women represented in the American Time Magazine? What are the pertinent concepts that surround and maintain this representation? What kinds of connections are there between the discourse on Muslim women’s dress and other discourses such as the war against Afghanistan and Iraq, education, migration and integration, Islam, etc.? More particularly, how is the discourse on the use of veil utilized to serve the interests of the other discourses?
The paper discusses the matter by first introducing the theoretical background that is used in the analysis. The introduction of the theoretical background is followed by a general description of Time Magazine and the articles concerning Muslim women. Finally, the discourse on Muslim women’s dress in Time Magazine is analyzed. The study argues that the discourse on Muslim women’s dress is shaped by other political and ideological discourses, and utilized to serve their interests. The discourse on women’s rights is a secondary issue and it is used to justify the imposing of Western values on Muslim societies. |
