| Abstract: | Iran has been the only long-lasting, semi-industrialized, theocratic state in world history. After reviewing its religious, historical, and economic background, I examine the Islamic government’s institutional innovations and its major macro- and micro-economic policies. From this analysis it becomes apparent that Iran’s government rules in a manner similar to that of a secular dictatorship, even though the social goals of these governments may differ, and that Iran’s gov-ernmental policies have been primarily guided, not by Islamic economic doctrines, but by the de-sire of the top leadership to maintain clerical power over the nation. |
