UCSIA organizes this lecture in cooperation with OCIPE, The Jesuit European Office.
The economic crisis hits the European Youth very hard: in December 2009, more than 21,4 % of the people aged under 25 were unemployed, compared to 16,9 % one year before. 2010 is the European Year Against Poverty and Social Exclusion. In the paper Europe 2020 the European Commission presents a strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. The Commission brings forward the idea of a large-scale project to improve the training of the youngsters, to increase their mobility and to broaden their access to the labor market. Does this policy attention suffice to reduce youth unemployment? What have been the results of the past Lisbon-strategy between 2000 and 2010?
Prof. Dr. Ides NICAISE will read a lecture on the topic of European youth unemployment, followed by a paneldebate with different parties concerned. Ides NICAISE is a researcher at the Higher Institute of Labour / K.U.Leuven. He is an expert of labor market policy, social inclusion and education and he is a member of the Belgian Higher Council for Employment.
