Jef Van Gerwen SJ (1952-2002) got acquainted with the field of business ethics while studying at Berkeley. He was the first to introduce this domain in Flanders. Many generations of students got to learn about business ethics through his textbook ‘Business and ethics, rules of the game for ethical business’ (Lannoo, 2002).

However, Jef was by far more than a business ethicist. He was the passionate president of USOS, the University Foundation for Development Cooperation. He was also closely involved in the operation of USAB, the University Foundation for Poverty Alleviation, and the Rector Dhanis Chair. In addition, he was one of the driving forces behind the Centre for Ethics (Department of Philosophy).
