As a leading thinker of the Frankfurt School, he developed the &#8216;Theory of Communicative Action&#8217;.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ef961a2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ef961a2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Throughout his work, Habermas consistently emphasized the importance of democracy, the rule of law and dialogue free from coercion. In recognition of his lifelong commitment to democracy, he was awarded the Erasmus Prize in 2013.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3e268614 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"3e268614\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-57257579 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"57257579\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6337d3f1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6337d3f1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What holds a democratic society together when its citizens differ fundamentally from one another?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7ef6757e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7ef6757e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This question runs like a common thread through Habermas\u2019s work and may be more urgent today than ever.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9ca64b3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9ca64b3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Habermas did not seek the answer in a shared heritage, religion, or way of life, but in the possibility of engaging in dialogue with one another as free and equal citizens.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fd9daeb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fd9daeb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Concepts such as communicative rationality, the public sphere and constitutional patriotism form the building blocks of this democratic ideal. Yet another concept, less frequently placed centre stage, also plays an important role: <strong>solidarity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cf1222a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cf1222a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Habermas once described solidarity as the <strong>other side of justice<\/strong>. Justice protects the equal freedom of every individual; solidarity refers to the mutual commitment without which that freedom is difficult to conceive.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5ca4bfc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5ca4bfc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>But is that enough? Can a just democracy itself generate the solidarity it needs? Can constitutional patriotism unite people who have little else in common? And what happens when citizens are no longer willing to listen to one another\u2019s arguments?<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-647c480 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"647c480\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In this session, we will not only reflect on Habermas\u2019s legacy but, above all, engage in discussion with Habermas. Following a brief introduction to his thought, participants will discuss several key questions in small groups, based on a text they will have read in advance.
