Migration Challenging Solidarity?
Utopian and Dystopian Visions
Panel conversation on 13 November 2024
UCSIA has many reasons to celebrate:
- We are launching the Solidarity Academy, a new project for the coming years.
- We will present a brand new house style.
- And, on top of that, we may welcome you in our beautifully renovated building.
You are warmly invited to celebrate with us. To that end, we organize a lunch conversation on a topic that goes to the heart of UCSIA and our Solidarity Academy.
One of its flagships will be a new winter school, which UCSIA is organizing in close collaboration with our partners from the University of Antwerp. The theme of the winter school is ‘European Solidarity in the Making’.
During the morning sessions, students will attend expert lectures, while in the afternoon they will discover for themselves what is happening ‘in the field’ and reflect on their experiences. The topic of the winter school might change every edition. We will start next year in February 2025 with a focus on migration.
To introduce the theme of the winter school, we have set up a panel with experts from various disciplines to talk with them about their visions on the challenges and opportunities of migration.
Based on their research, activities and engagement, they will dwell on what they see as their biggest fears and greatest sources of hope. What are their utopias? And yes, what are their dystopias? By organizing this panel, we want to stimulate an open, intellectually enriching debate on one of today’s major challenges.
Due to its extent and impact, migration might induce a feeling of resignation. But without wanting to minimize the huge challenges, there are also many evolutions and opportunities that offer inspiration, trust and guidance.
Joining us at the table:
- Milena Belloni (Coordinator Network on Migration and Global Mobility, UAntwerp)
- Nathalie Dens (Vice-rector for Social Engagement and International Policy UAntwerp)
- Helga Corvers (Change project, Jesuit Refugee Service)
- Benoit Dhondt (Human Rights Lawyer)
Pascal Debruyne (Odisee) will moderate the conversation.
