For the academic year 2025-2026, UCSIA is funding a scholarship for a PhD student from a university in the Global South, who wishes to spend a period at the University of Antwerp under the supervision of an eligible academic staff member from the University of Antwerp.
During his/her stay at the University of Antwerp, the student will also co-organize a public event on a topic of concern for the Global South, preferably related to one of the UCSIA solidarity academy’s current focus themes, just transition and migration.
The grant consists of a monthly allowance of 1750 EUR for a maximum duration of 10 months (starting no later than 1 October 2025) and travel costs, including arrival in and departure from Antwerp, as well as conference participation within Europe (max 2500 EUR).

Conditions
Candidates must comply with the following conditions:
- Originate from one of the countries listed on the OECD/DAC list of developing countries, preferably from the "Least Developed Countries, Other Low Income Countries or Lower Middle Income Countries” categories;
- Be registered as doctoral student at an accredited university in a country in the Global South;
- Have the intention to valorize their training in a country in the Global South;
- Be maximum 35 years old.
Applications
Applications should include the following elements:
- Name, contact address, nationality, date and place of birth, country of residence;
- Past education, qualifications and study results;
- PhD proposal on the basis of which the student has been accepted in the foreign university;
Motivation of the request:
- Rationale of the stay at the UAntwerp within the framework of the PhD trajectory;
- Envisaged timing of the stay and the broader PhD trajectory;

Development relevance of the research:
• How this research fits within a broader strategy of academic capacity strengthening;
• How this research matches with societal actors’ agendas and/or wider policy processes in the country of origin; - Envisaged topic of the public event to be organized at the University of Antwerp in cooperation with UCSIA.

- Three references, of which one written by the supervisor of the PhD at the foreign university and one by the University of Antwerp staff member supervising the PhD student, explicitly stating the commitment of both entities.
