This book explores service-learning as an innovative form of education in higher education. Instead of learning exclusively in auditoriums or practical classrooms, students are challenged to work with social partners on challenges in the ‘real’ world. Through experiential education, they combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience, while contributing to social change.
Using practical examples, such as homework support for underprivileged children, designing mobile housing units with homeless people and sustainable water installations in Bénin, the book shows how service-learning encourages students to engage head, heart and hands. It offers both a theoretical framework and practical guidelines, supported by inspiring cases from the Flemish Network for Service-Learning in Higher Education.
The Flemish Network for Service-learning in Higher Education is a network of universities and colleges of higher education in Flanders working together to promote and foster service-learning in Flanders. The network is organised and supported from UCSIA.
