Financing a Just Transition

1 December 2025

A sustainable future is something we build together. But how do we ensure that no one is left behind? During this autumn school (in Dutch), we will explore ways to finance climate change with consideration for social justice.

Financing a Just Transition

We are organizing the Autumn School in collaboration with Reset.Vlaanderen and the University of Antwerp.

Participation fee (including vegan lunch):
โ‚ฌ 30 for Reset.Vlaanderen members
โ‚ฌ 40 for non-members

The Climate Transition

The climate transition is no longer a distant prospect โ€” it is already underway. But how can we ensure that this transition is not only ecologically necessary, but also socially just?

The way we finance the shift determines who can participate and who gets left behind. The question of fair financing is therefore one of the most urgent and yet most overlooked issues of our time.

The Autumn School

During the Autumn School, we will place this crucial dimension of the climate transition front and center.

We will explore how money, investments, and economic structures can contribute to a future where sustainability and justice go hand in hand.

We invite thinkers, practitioners, policymakers, students, and engaged citizens to reflect together on the role of financing in the transition. How can we rethink and reform financial systems so that they serve the common good, rather than undermine it?

What to expect: A day full of inspiration, critical reflection, and concrete alternatives.

Leading keynote lectures

Prof. dr. Joyeeta Gupta

Distinguished Professor of Climate Justice, Sustainability and Global Justice at the University of Amsterdam, Spinoza Prize winner, and member of the Global Commission on the Economics of Water. She was lead author of the Nobel Prize-winning IPCC report and co-chair of the UN 10-Member Group on Science, Technology & Innovation.

In her keynote, she asks: how can we reconcile ecological boundaries with global justice? She advocates for a climate-just constitution and fair planetary boundaries.

Prof. dr. Derk Loorbach

Director of DRIFT and Professor of Socio-Economic Transitions at Erasmus University Rotterdam. A pioneer in transition management, he has supported governments, businesses, and citizens in structural change for years.

In his keynote โ€œThe Cost of Nothing and the Value of Something,โ€ he dissects the growth-driven financial system and explores how we can shift to an economy that is socially and ecologically valuable.

Interactieve keuzesessies

In addition, we offer interactive breakout sessions.

In these sessions, participants can dive deeper into topics such as sustainable finance and systems thinking, values-based banking, steward-owned enterprises, sustainable taxation, and the tensions between science and political power.

These are crucial questions, such as:

  • How can we rethink money and value in a world that urgently needs transformation?
  • What alternatives exist to the current financial system, and how can they contribute to an inclusive and ecological economy?
  • How can we ensure that the European climate transition is socially just and leaves no one behind?
  • What does it mean when scientific insights come under pressure in policymaking around the climate transition?

The Autumn School is a space for meeting, exchange, and imagining alternative futures. Together, we will explore new frameworks, concrete practices, and inspiring examples that show a fair climate transition is possible.
