Trainings workshop HET Week
On Tuesday 13 October, we will host a training workshop to present the first results of the project.
At this workshop, you will be introduced to the service-learning pedagogy and learn how it contributes to democratic competences as described in the Council of Europe’s Reference Framework on Competences for Democratic Culture.
We will explore the resources developed in the first phase of the SL4DC project and reflect together on how these tools can be implemented at your own higher education institution.
The Role of Higher Education in Civic Education
In the face of growing challenges to democracy, including declining civic participation, social fragmentation and the spread of misinformation, higher education has a critical role in equipping students with competences for active and responsible citizenship.
Universities are key actors in preserving democratic values, fostering critical thinking and promoting solidarity. However, ensuring that students develop competences for democratic culture requires more than traditional classroom teaching. It demands active, experiential learning approaches that connect academic knowledge with real-world societal challenges.
Erasmus+ project SL4DC
UCSIA coordinates the Erasmus+ project ‘Service-Learning to foster Competences for Democratic Culture’ (SL4DC), a collaboration of 12 European partners exploring the potential of service-learning pedagogy to develop democratic competences. The project runs from November 2025 until October 2028.
Higher Education Transformation Week
The workshop is organized as part of the Higher Education Transformation Week, an initiative of several European organizations aiming to showcase the diversity, creativity, and impact of Erasmus+ KA2 Cooperation Partnerships in higher education.
Throughout the week, Erasmus+ consortia will organize free public workshops, conferences, and other events across Brussels, offering you the opportunity to engage in a range of activities to advance European higher education.
