Keynote lecture by Sten Rynning (Department of Political Science of the University of Southern Denmark) 

Sten Rynning is professor at the Department of Political Science of the University of Southern Denmark. He works in the War Studies tradition with a focus on war, alliance cooperation, and efforts to control and rein in the use of armed force. He notably researches NATO and its role in stabilizing the continent. His current research projects focus on NATO’s history and current trajectory and the tendency of security scholarship to draw back from policy engagement. He is currently writing a monograph for Yale University Press. His book NATO in Afghanistan (Stanford University Press, 2012) was placed on the Choice’s 2015 list of Outstanding Academic Titles. He has also published books with Cambridge University Press, Brookings Press, Palgrave, I.B. Tauris, and Routledge.

Ulrich Kühn is Head of the research area “Arms Control and Emerging Technologies” at the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH). He is also a Non-Resident Scholar of the Nuclear Policy Program, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Founder and Permanent Member of the Trilateral Deep Cuts Commission.

Yoichiro Sato is Professor in the College of Asia Pacific Studies at the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Beppu, Japan. Previously, he taught at the U.S. Department of Defense’s Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, Auckland University in New Zealand, the Colorado School of Mines, Kansai Gaidai Hawaii College, and the University of Hawaii.
