KSGV conference (in Dutch)

Anger, Violence and Ideology

The UCSIA-KSGV conference 2020 starts with the conclusion that our ways of living together and communicating have changed drastically over the last ten years. Collective cultural and spiritual frameworks seem to be on their way down. In the meantime, the individual is filing up the gaps.

The tensions that emerge between generation, lifestyles an ideologies, are often magnified on social media. For example, some write down their anger in unfiltered messages and balance between freedom of speech and hate speech. Or some mobilize engaged supporters against structural injustice, failing policy, inequality, etc… This constantly visible flow of emotional high tension is a breeding ground for online and offline expressions of structural aggression against for instance women and minorities. However, it can also be motivator for human rights or climate activism.

This conference will address the topic of ‘anger, violence and ideology’ through the lens of the philosophy of culture, ideology and therapy. We will keep into account the ambiguity of anger (as a problem or as a positive force), the impact on society and the role ideologies can play. Furthermore, we will pay attention to the ways to deal with anger and violence from an ideological point of view, more specifically christian faith and the position of pastors. Finally the relation between shame, anger and violence in a psychiatric setting will be addressed.
