To the Borders

How can we reach people on the margins of society through education?

Panel (in Dutch) on 16 October 2023

‘Going to the borders’ has always been part of the Jesuits’ core missions. It is no different today. Jesuits actively seek out the people at the borders, near and far, literally and figuratively. We will present their work very concretely through three practices in education. Education has been one of the areas in which Jesuits have always distinguished themselves from other orders. From their inception, they recognised the potential of education as an emancipatory link in society.

We focus on three vulnerable groups in our society that face different challenges today: young people, prisoners and refugees. The central question sounds as simple as the answer is complex: how do they cope with these challenges and how can education contribute to this?

Panel discussion moderated by Nicolas Standaert (KU Leuven/ELC) with, among others, Bob Van de Putte (CEBECO), Eddy Van De Velde (Egied Van Broeckhovencollege), Bruno Standaert (JRS Belguim), and Gerlinde Verbist (lecturer subject ‘Community Service Learning’ – University of Antwerp).

This panel (in Dutch) is part of our lecture series on the big questions in society that UCSIA is organizing in the framework of the Baroque Influencers city festival.
